Piezoceramics can be found in diesel engines, for example. Piezo technology works reliably and extremely efficiently: Piezo injectors ensure dynamic fuel injection and optimize the combustion process in the engine. A further and also very well-known application of our mobile time are massage and comfort seats, which use piezo actuators to provide relaxation while driving. Piezoceramic components are also successfully preferred for parking sensors or as knock sensors.
Piezo technology for mobility up to the stars
Piezo technology can also be found in aerospace in a variety of applications, and on the International Space Station (ISS). In satellites, for example, Piezo is used in vibration sensors or accelerometers.
As in industrial applications, Piezo actuators in valves and flow sensors are a perfect application for piezoelectric systems.
Active noise reduction and active vibration damping are further fields of application.
Piezo actuators in positioning systems achieve extremely high precision, not only in aerospace applications, but also under water or in our everyday environment.
Piezo powers up resolutions
The space rover “Curiosity” took numerous pictures during its mission, which, thanks to a newly developed application (based on piezoceramics), could be displayed in a resolution never before achieved.
Telescopes that visually distinguish objects up to a maximum size of 1 meter are surpassed by piezo components by a factor of 5 in terms of resolution: With the same optics, the ceramics can display objects as small as 20 cm in size.

Piezo elements are often used as sensors for a wide variety of vehicle parameters. Piezoceramic components are not only responsible for the fine control of modern lighting systems and optics in automotive applications. From the user’s point of view, the comfort but also the safety of vehicles (on land and in the air) is increased. In diagnostics, Piezo elements offer never seen high resolutions, enabling new solutions and ensure economical and reliable systems.
Due to the high resolution of piezo-based sensors, submarines can navigate many nautical miles ahead with great precision, and many lights on our children’s bicycles are also powered by piezo, for example, and the future will certainly bring further exciting, useful and predestined applications.
